Comedian Robert Webb, who had open-heart surgery two years ago, shocked fans when he announced he was leaving Strictly Come Dancing on Wednesday
Joe Sugg has broken his silence over girlfriend Diane Buswell ’s shock exit from Strictly Come Dancing, after her celebrity dance partner Robert Webb announced he had to quit the BBC One show due to ill health.
The Peep Show star underwent open-heart surgery two years, confessing he was “close to death” at the time of the op, and in a surprise statement on Wednesday, the 49-year-old told his disappointed fans he would be sadly leaving the dancing competition.
YouTube star Joe, who began dating pro dancer Dianne since he appeared on Strictly back in 2018, took to social media to send his best wishes to Robert after his shock departure.
“Will miss seeing team dirb on the screen!” Joe wrote on his Instagram Stories, revealing his cute nickname for the duo.
“Wishing you all the best Robert,” he added.
Funnyman Robert had been wowing viewers with his performances on the Strictly dancefloor, impressing the judges with his extravagant paso doble in week one, and a 70s disco-inspired cha cha in week two.
Robert and Dianne channeled The Muppets characters Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy as they performed a quickstep during last Saturday’s show, which viewers were unaware was their last-ever dance together.
In a statement released on Wednesday, which was also read out on the BBC Two spin-off show It Takes Two, Robert said he had been told to quit by his doctor after suffering symptoms.
“Two years ago I had open heart surgery and although I believed I was fit enough to take on Strictly and its demanding schedule, it became clear that I had bitten off way more than I could chew for this stage in my recovery,” he shared.
“I had begun to feel symptoms that led me to seek an urgent consultation with my heart specialist, and it was her view that it would be better for the sake of my health to step back from the show,” Robert added.
He thanked Dianne for her unwavering support, and said he regrets “having to let her down like this”.
“I couldn’t have wished for a more talented partner or more patient teacher, and it’s a measure of Dianne’s professionalism and kindness that I was able to get as far as I did,” he sweetly added.
In 2019, Robert underwent major surgery after revealing he was close to death because of an undiagnosed heart condition.
Doctors discovered he had a heart murmur caused by a mitral valve prolapse, and was days from death before having the life-saving op.
“So it was all a bit touch and go,” he confessed.
