ITV Anne viewers left sobbing over ‘hard to watch’ drama

ITV’s new drama Anne, which tells the story of a woman whose son was killed at the Hillsborough disaster, and her fight for justice, has left viewers in tears.

The four-part drama, which airs this week, follows Anne Williams and her 15-year-old son Kevin, who was one of 97 people unlawfully killed at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield in 1989.

Actress Maxine Peake portrays Anne, while Stephen Walters plays Steve Williams and Michael Williams plays Bobby Schofield.

Stephen Campbell Moore plays barrister Ed Fitzgerald in what is one of his biggest roles since he starred in War of the Worlds.

He has also starred in The History Boys as Irwin, Downton Abbey as Major Chetwode and Johnny English Reborn as the Prime Minister.

In 2011, he starred in The Season of the Witch, and that’s where he would meet his future wife, Claire Foy.

Claire is best known for playing Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown, for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

She is also currently starring in the BBC’s A Very British Scandal as the disgraced Duchess of Argyll, Margaret Campbell.

Stephen and Claire got married in 2014, and welcomed a daughter named Ivy Rose in March 2015.

The following year, Stephen underwent life-saving surgery after doctors found a tumour on his pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain.

The 42-year-old revealed he prepared for the surgery by writing letters to his loved ones, just in case the worst should happen.

“You realise you’re not the most important person in that process, and everybody who loves you goes through far worse,” he told The Sun.

“My daughter didn’t know what was going on at all. But my family did, and I could see it in them.

“But it’s all very much on the off chance that something did go wrong because every part of you is saying that nothing will.”

He added: “Waking up and being told the operation had gone well was understandably a huge relief.”

The surgery had gone well – but two years later, Stephen was back in hospital having the same operation once again.

Claire has also had her fair share of health troubles, having suffered from a benign tumour in her eye when she was 17.

She underwent surgery to remove it and said she was “lucky to have a face”.

“It was horrible and debilitating, but it made me realise that I needed to grab the life I wanted,” she said.

“I was a bit like Cyclops and it was all a bit scary,” she added.

“I was on steroids for about a year and a half afterwards [and it] makes you put on a lot of weight and have really bad skin.”

Months after Stephen’s second surgery, he and Claire announced they were divorcing.

They said in a statement: “We have separated and have been for some time.

“We do however continue as great friends with the utmost respect for one another.”

Stephen has since moved on with actress Sophie Cookson, who is 11 years his junior.

Sophie starred in Kingsman: The Secret Service in 2014 and has since appeared in films including Greed and BBC drama The Trial of Christine Keeler.

In 2017, she appeared in Red Joan with Stephen, which is how they met.

In 2020, they welcomed their first child together, though they never publicly revealed the baby’s sex or name.
