Ben Shephard updates viewers on his leg post-surgery

When he’s not grilling politicians in the Good Morning Britain studio, Ben Shephard uses his social media accounts to keep fans updated on the ups and downs of his personal life – his current painful health battle has been no exception.

Earlier this week, he posted a video of his leg wired up to a scary-looking contraption he compared to a sci-fi horror film.

It’s the latest in long list of treatments Ben has been forced to undergo in his slow recovery from an agonising double leg injury he suffered last year.

The active TV host loves sports, listing kitesurfing, rugby, golf and wakeboarding as some of his hobbies and completing 14 marathons in the past ten years.

He even climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2019 alongside celebs including Ronan Keating, Denise Van Outen and Gary Barlow.

But in 2021, the 47-year-old ruptured his ACL, tore his meniscus and fractured his leg during a football match.

He explained the gruesome injury to viewers after his GMB co-host Susanna Reid remarked on his leg brace.

“I wish I had taken a photograph in my dressing room this morning, because Ben came in with quite the get up on your leg,” she said.

“Quite the outfit, yep,” replied Ben.

He continued: “A few weeks to go, you may remember I played in the Cup Final of the Arthur Dunn veterans cup, my old boys’ team.

“We won the Cup Final, but I started with two legs and ended with one.

“Without realising, I have ruptured my ACL, I’ve torn the meniscus and I’ve fractured part of my leg as well.”

That summer, Ben shared that he was preparing from surgery, posting photos from his hospital bed.

“Op happens today!! so far so good – arrow on the correct leg @andipeters on the tv + super stylish socks in place,” he wrote.

A few hours later, a tired Ben addressed his fans as he said: “Hi everybody, thank you for all the amazing, lovely messages.

“For those who didn’t know, I ruptured my ACL and tore my meniscus in my knee playing football.”

He went on to share a look at his leg, which was wrapped up.

“That’s how it looks at the moment. That’s not fake tan by the way, I promise, despite my Essex roots,” he added.

Gesturing to the orange-yellow colour on his legs, he quipped: “I didn’t fake tan before my surgery.”

“So they’ve repaired the ACL and meniscus and now starts the rehab – very slow, long, rehab. Have to say, the painkillers seem to be doing the job right now!”

Tagging Kate Garraway and Susanna, he joked: “I can’t believe I broadcast on painkillers like this a few years back!

“Kate Garraway and Susanna Reid – what were you thinking letting me broadcast when I felt like this?!”

After spending the night in hospital and taking two weeks off GMB to recover, Ben received messages of well-wishes from his co-stars.

“Oh you are always a consummate broadcaster Ben Shephard, and good luck with your recovery,” Susanna said on air.

“I know Ben is going to be back in the studio very soon. He watches us still from the hospital bed and I am sure he will be watching the game from there this evening.

“Lots of love to you Ben, get well soon.”

When Ben returned to the studio, he had his leg elevated by a chair as he sat on the panel, joking that he “deserved to have his feet up”.

The same week, he also revealed he was undergoing intensive physiotherapy.

Taking to Instagram, Ben shared a video clip of his leg in an electrostimulation machine before he attempted some squats.

“Very excited,” he said as he opened up the box containing the tool.

“I’ve got some shiny new kit, a little bit of tech. It’s gonna make my muscles work while I’m doing my rehab.”

One he was all strapped into the brace and the machine was pumping, Ben wrote: “It’s alive!! Back on the @compex_uk trying to stimulate my quad – feels and looks v odd!”

He added: “Right just trying to stimulate the quad while reducing the swelling around my knee.

“Gone full bionic leg,” he joked.

And the session was a success, he revealed, as he posted a photo of his straightened leg, writing: “That final degree means I got the leg straight.

“Can’t believe the effort just to straighten the leg.”

His delighted physiotherapist, Mo, confirmed using a protractor that Ben had indeed managed to straighten his leg, and the pair celebrated his progress.
