Council moves ahead with support for war relief effort in Ukraine

The city is stepping up to pledge its support for Ukraine and those organizations working to help the people caught in the country after Russia invaded two weeks ago.

In one of the biggest assaults by one European country against another since the Second World War, Russia brought the eight-year-old Russo-Ukrainian War to centre stage on Feb. 24 when it launched a full-scale invasion of the Ukrainian mainland — and the attack has resonated across the globe.

In Nelson, Coun. Jesse Woodward had brought forward the notion of the city — and other local governments — helping organizations working on the war relief effort in Ukraine, in a late item on the March 8 city council regular agenda.

He posed the idea of the City of Nelson contributing financially to the ally of Canada, with a pre-meeting suggestion by the city’s corporate officer, Sarah Winton, suggesting looking into the best organization that the municipality could help out, rather than an outright contribution.

“I’m just trying to get a little something going because a lot of people, like myself, feel a little helpless and maybe this could help people find a way,” he said.

“The other element to that thought is, if we could find a good way of doing that, we could challenge other municipalities to do what we are doing and maybe get a bit of a wave across (the province).”

Woodward moved a motion to that effect, that the City of Nelson donate $1,000 to a registered main stream organization to help with relief in Ukraine, with city staff looking into the best way of doing that, and challenging other local governments to meet and do the same.

The motion passed unanimously and without debate.

There are several worthwhile organizations working in Ukraine and Canada to help with the relief effort, including the Canadian Red Cross, Doctors without Borders, Save the Children and Phoenix Wings, to name a few.
