Liverpool told to meet Mohamed Salah contract demands as goalless draw against ten-man Arsenal showed Reds are ‘bang average’ without him

Liverpool have been urged to give Mohamed Salah whatever he wants after his importance was made even more obvious by his absence for the 0-0 draw with Arsenal.

Without the star forward, away on AFCON duty with Egypt, the Reds failed to muster a single shot on target against the ten-man Gunners until stoppage time in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Salah has been involved in nearly half of Liverpool’s goals this season, establishing himself as arguably the best player in world football on current form.

According to ex-Chelsea striker Jason Cundy, Jurgen Klopp’s side are a totally different proposition without him and Senegal star Sadio Mane.

He told talkSPORT: “They’re a completely different team.

“The depth in that squad up top is not good enough. Without Salah and Mane, two world-class players, Liverpool looked bang average tonight.

“They lacked that urgency, that zip, that creativity, that threat.”

Reports suggest the Reds might have to get used to life without Salah if they refuse to meet his contract demands.

Salah’s future remains unclear

The 29-year-old’s current deal expires in June 2023 and it has been claimed Salah is asking for £400,000-a-week, which Liverpool are reluctant to pay.

However, Cundy insists tonight proved even further that Salah is worth his weight in gold.

He added: “He would’ve watched that somewhere and thought, ‘My God, how desperately do they need me?’

“His numbers are astonishing. They’re ridiculous.”

He added: “Salah, right now, is one of the best players in the world.

“We saw tonight exactly who Liverpool are when they don’t have him. Ok, Mane is missing as well.

“But my God, if ever there was a reason to say, ‘Let’s get this deal done’ – tonight was it!”

And former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara agreed, arguing that the Reds would only spend more by trying to sign a replacement.

O’Hara told talkSPORT: “They should pay him £400,000-a-week. They can’t replace him.

“It doesn’t look like they want to spend the money. If they lose him, they’re not going to replace him with a £100m player.”

He added: “Jack Grealish went for £100m and he’s nowhere near as good as Salah.

“So if you’re talking £100m, you might as well pay £400,000-a-week!”
