Ritchot addresses drainage, speeding, and flood assistance

On May 19, Ritchot council held their monthly evening meeting, addressing a variety of items on the agenda including a number of variation and conditional use applications.

Council voted in favour of co-funding a land drainage study for an area located just north of Île-des-Chênes. Since the drainage issues affect land in both Ritchot and Tache, the $30,000 cost for the study will be shared between both municipalities.

As well, council passed a resolution to accept financial aid from the province’s Disaster Financial Assistance program. Both the RM and residents can apply for aid if they sustained flood-related damage to their properties.

According to CAO Mitch Duval, this year’s assistance became available very quickly in comparison to other years, and required only nominal lobbying by the RM.

Finally, Duval was excited to report that the municipality was given the green light by the province to install traffic speed display signs along Main Street in St. Adolphe. Two signs had been purchased by the RM for this location some time ago, but their use was stalled while waiting for provincial approval.

“It is recommended by the Department of Highways that the signs be moved every three months just because, after three months, traffic tends to… not obey the signs anymore,” Duval says. “[Instead they] use it as a racetrack speed sign display more than anything else.”

Four locations along the community’s main drag have been selected for the rotation of the signs. Councillor Mamchuk, who represents the community of St. Adolphe, commended Duval and the public works department for their efforts in making this happen.

“It’s been long forthcoming,” Mamchuk says. “We’ve been on this subject for several years and I know we have to go through a process, but I think the residents will really appreciate that we are trying to make an effort to combat the speeders.”
