Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode’s Radio 5 Live programme started in 2001, and has the two spending the first hour breaking down the week’s top ten films
Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode have announced that their Radio 5 Live Film Review is ending.
The two’s radio programme sees them discussing the latest film releases and inviting on actors, guests and hearing listeners’ emails.
Kermode and Mayo first appeared as a duo on BBC Radio 1 in the 1990s.
Their Radio 5 Live programme started in 2001 and has the two spending the first hour breaking down the week’s top ten films.
And now, the official Twitter account has sadly revealed the end to the long-running show.
“Simon Mayo has announced that Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review is coming to an end on @bbc5live. The last show will be on April 1st,” it was tweeted.
It was accompanied by a photo quote.
“21 years is a long time to be clogging up the schedules,” it read.
“We – and no one else – have decided to step away… To withdraw… to spread our wings… to exit, pursued by a bear.”
Fans took to the comment section to share their memories of the show and say goodbye to the hosts.
“As a wise man once said…It’ll all be alright in the end, and if it isn’t alright, then it isn’t the end. Well, it’s still alright & this isn’t really the end for you, or us. Goodbye Good Doctors & thanks for all,” one said.
Another added: “Mark Kermode has been the person I’ve looked up to when I started writing about film. Simon Mayo has been someone I’ve loved listening to over the years from when I was a child.
“The combination of your voices and personalities have inspired me for many years. Sad to see you go.”

One upset user posted: “Genuinely sad that this is the case BUT happy for you both to go out on a high.”
“What?!! Wahhh..!! While completely understanding this from your point of view, this is such gutting news. You’ve walked with me for so many parts of my life, you’re woven into so much of my story. I feel part of your community,” a heartbroken fan added.
Fans always look forward to Mayo reading comments from listeners on the films, with many of the comments being on films Kermode never saw.
After reading comments, guests – like directors and actors – appear for a pre-recorded interview.
The radio show had many guests over the years, including the likes of Jason Isaacs, Michael Sheen and David Morrissey.
At the end of each show, Kermode identifies his ‘Film of the Week.’
In May 2009, Mayo and Kermode won a Gold Sony Radio Award in the Speech Award category, due to continued good work and passion for radio.
