Manchester City vs Liverpool has been described as ‘the Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi of club football’.
That’s according to Ally McCoist, who has likened the Premier League powerhouses’ rivalry to the GOAT duo, saying ‘they bring the best out of each other’.
Football fans are still catching their breath after a dramatic final day in the English top flight as both sides battled to try and earn the title.
While it was Pep Guardiola’s City who eventually came out on top, just one point separated the two teams after 38 matches with the duo forging a hugely entertaining rivalry in recent years.
With mutual respect at the heart of the battle, fans will be looking forward to many more between the two sides in the years to come as they push each other to new heights.
With Guardiola’s side already completing a deal to sign Erling Haaland this summer, Liverpool will be pushed into finding a way to battle with them moving forward.
And McCoist believes it’s a similar dynamic between the two greatest players of the modern era.
Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, he said: “I likened it to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
“The two of them for years and years, clearly the two best players in the world, they pushed each other and brought each other on.
“Liverpool and Manchester City are the same.
“They’re completely different teams. They’ve both got fantastic players and fantastic squads, but they play the game differently and it’s just been a joy.
“They bring the best out of each other.
“I’ve got to say the first game, the 2-2 draw in the league, it was one of the best games of football I’ve ever seen.
“The standard, the pace the quality was nothing short of magnificent.
“They’ve been a joy to watch, the two of them.”
Jamie O’Hara also discussed the rivalry following the news of Haaland’s arrival at Man City, saying that Liverpool would need to go big in the transfer market following the blockbuster deal for the Norwegian striker.
Speaking ahead of City’s final day title win, the former Tottenham midfielder told talkSPORT: “I think that they’ve got to react to the fact that Man City have signed [Erling] Haaland.
“That’s the final piece to the jigsaw, you’d say. Man City are going to probably win the Premier League without a striker, really.
“They’ve played most of the season without one.
“When you bring in Haaland who, for me, is going to be a complete superstar in the Premier League, Liverpool have to react and bring in someone big as well because otherwise I feel that they will end up getting left behind.
“Man City have spent £100million on Grealish and you’d have to say that hasn’t been the best signing that they could have made, but when you bring in Haaland, now you’re talking.
“That is a big step up in quality, for me. That’s one hell of a signing and Liverpool need to react to that.”
